2026 GMC Acadia side view

The big and burly GMC Acadia is the perfect SUV for pretty much all activities, including outdoor adventures or just making runs to the grocery store. Over the last two decades, however, this model has undergone some big changes. If you’re wondering, “When did GMC Acadia change body style?” Key Buick GMC has this rundown of its history.

First Generation

The GMC Acadia first hit the scene back in 2006 as a 2007 model. This was GMC's first crossover SUV, and this meant that its construction was car-based instead of truck-based, which ensured a smoother ride. The GMC Acadia was notable for its huge interior that could accommodate up to eight people.

Second Generation

For the 2017 model year, the GMC Acadia entered its second generation. While the previous models bordered on the large SUV segment, now the GMC Acadia more firmly fit into the midsize class.

This model retained a similar, if softened, exterior design, but it was both smaller — about seven inches was trimmed off of its length — and lighter. Plus, thanks to a refresh in 2020, this SUV had a sharper and cleaner appearance.

Third Generation

Currently, the GMC Acadia sits in its third generation, which began with the 2024 model year. Once again, this SUV has undergone big changes, and it now more closely resembles the larger model from the first generation. Compared with the second generation, it is more than 10 inches longer and more than four inches taller, so those missing seven inches have returned and then some.
